How to Search

Search types, instant answers, operators, and tips for getting the best results on GOOD Search.

GOOD Search gives you five distinct search types, a set of instant-answer tools, and several ways to narrow results — all without tracking or ads.

Search Types

Switch between types using the tabs below the search bar.

Web

The default. Returns ranked web pages from the selected provider's index. Works with all three providers (GOOD Search, Mojeek, Staan).

Good for: articles, documentation, product pages, general research.

Images

Returns image thumbnails with source links. Available with the GOOD Search provider.

Good for: finding photos, illustrations, logos, or visual references.

News

Returns recent news articles with publication date and source name. Available with the GOOD Search provider.

Good for: current events, press coverage, recent announcements.

Videos

Returns video results with thumbnails and duration. Available with the GOOD Search provider.

Good for: tutorials, reviews, talks, entertainment.

Local

Finds places near you — restaurants, shops, services, and other points of interest. Available with the GOOD Search provider.

How location works:

  • Click the pin icon in the "Where" bar to share your browser location. Your coordinates are used only for the current search and never stored.
  • Or type a place name in the Where field (e.g. "Prenzlauer Berg" or "Munich") to search without sharing your GPS position.
  • If you leave both empty, results are based on your general region.

Good for: yoga studios, coffee shops, pharmacies, doctors, parking — anything with a physical address.

Instant Answers & Rich Results

For certain queries, GOOD Search shows a direct answer above the web results. These appear automatically when using the GOOD Search provider.

Narrowing Your Results

Search Operators (in the query itself)

Type these directly in the search box:

OperatorExampleEffect
"…""climate change solutions"Exact phrase match
-wordjavascript -jqueryExclude a term
site:site:github.com rustLimit to one domain
filetype:machine learning filetype:pdfSpecific file type

Freshness Filter

Limit results to a recent time window. Open Settings → Search Preferences or use the filter controls:

  • Past 24 hours — breaking news, very recent content
  • Past week — recent discussions and updates
  • Past month — monthly developments
  • Past year — content from the last 12 months
  • Custom range — pick exact start and end dates

Safe Search

Controls whether explicit content is filtered. Three levels:

  • Off — no filtering
  • Moderate (default) — filters explicit content
  • Strict — filters explicit and suggestive content

Available in Settings → Search Preferences.

Country & Language

Bias results toward a specific country or language:

  • Country — e.g. DE for Germany, FR for France
  • Search language — the language of pages returned
  • UI language — the language of result metadata

Set in Settings → Search Preferences. Applies to all providers that support it.

Units

Switch between metric and imperial for unit conversions and distance display. Set in Settings → Search Preferences (GOOD Search provider only).

Provider

Each provider has its own independent index, so the same query can return different results:

  • GOOD Search (default) — full feature set including images, news, videos, and local
  • Mojeek — UK-based independent crawler, good for a second opinion
  • Staan — European index (Qwant + Ecosia joint venture)

Switch provider in Settings → Search Preferences. The available tabs adjust automatically — image, news, video, and local are only available with GOOD Search.

Spell Correction & Query Suggestions

  • Autosuggest — as you type, suggestions appear below the search bar. Press ↑/↓ to navigate, Enter or click to select.
  • Spellcheck — if your query looks misspelled, a corrected version is run automatically. A banner shows the original query so you can revert.
  • Related searches — at the bottom of results, related queries help you explore adjacent topics.

These features are available with the GOOD Search provider.

Tips for Better Results

  • Be specific: "vegan restaurant Mitte Berlin" finds more than "restaurant"
  • Use the Local tab for place searches — it returns structured POI data (address, hours, rating) instead of just web links
  • Combine operators: site:reddit.com "mechanical keyboard" -gaming narrows to Reddit threads about keyboards that aren't gaming-focused
  • Try a different provider if results feel too similar — Mojeek and Staan use completely independent indexes
  • Use freshness for fast-moving topics like news or software releases

  • Search Providers — which features work with which provider
  • Settings & Preferences — how to configure your search preferences
  • Privacy — how searches and location data are handled
